About XIMI
XIMI is a springboard for working and creating collaboratively in the digital realm. Designed by artists for artists, XIMI provides a solution for creating LIVE digital performances.
A Synchronisation Tool
XIMI enables the synchronisation of audio and video feeds, from each individual source and as a collective whole, by minimising latency. Regardless of variances in internet bandwidths across the world, performers can perform together live in real time, as if they were physically in the same space.
A Digital Backstage
Seamlessly integrating with the live streaming process, XIMI allows for conventional stage management workflows that would happen in a physical theatre to happen “offstage” in a digital theatre.

A Browser-Based System
All XIMI needs is a laptop and a stable internet connection, allowing artists to create, rehearse and perform without additional hardware. Accessories (e.g. microphone, external camera) can be added to enhance performance, as long as they are compatible with the user’s laptop.
XIMI was shortlisted for the 2022 Technical Invention Prize (TIP) and was selected for exhibition at the 2022 World Stage Design in Calgary, Canada. It was also included in the TIP Catalogue.

The People
Behind XIMI
As Singapore’s longest running professional bilingual theatre institution, The Theatre Practice (Practice) has a long history of experimentation and pushing artistic boundaries.
When Digital Theatre emerged as a storytelling format during the pandemic, Practice was one of the first Singapore theatre companies to embrace this form – both through groundbreaking Digital Theatre productions and innovative technological developments.
Created to enable live digital theatre creation beyond the limitations of existing technologies, XIMI is the product of cross-industry collaboration between Practice and digital technologists Good Work.
Artist-driven and deeply progressive, Practice strives to be an arts space in Singapore that consciously nurtures and empowers people who care about humanity.
Over the past 59 years, we have developed and presented works that aim to reflect the richness and complexities of Singapore’s diverse cultures and have presented a critically-acclaimed repertoire of over 350 productions including musicals, classics, original and experimental works.
Artistically diverse and constantly relevant, Practice will always engage with the ceaseless exploration of new frontiers.
XIMI is supported by the National Arts Council Organisation Transformation Grant (2020-2021) and the Sector Transformation Fund (2023).
